Top 10 Best Humidifier For Plants & A Guide To Humidifying Your Plants

If you live in a cold place, space heaters, fireplaces, and other elements of indoor heating can dramatically reduce indoor humidity levels. Now, this may not seem like a big deal to you, but dry air can wreak havoc on your plants, especially if you have a lot of humidity-loving tropical plants at your place. So, what can you do?

Best Humidifiers for Plants

Unless you live in warm and humid tropical regions, humidifiers can be a life-saver for your plants.

An easy fix is to install a plant humidifier. A humidifier can raise the air humidity in your home so plants can thrive. A good humidifier lets you adjust the moisture in the air while having a high-capacity run time and without making too much noise.

Increased air moisture also helps the people living in a home by fending off sore throats, dry skin, and sinuses. Nevertheless, when looking for a humidifier, please ensure that it can meet your needs. It involves considering several important factors like room size, run time,  type of humidifier, and plants’ humidity requirement.

However, with so many products on the market, it is easy to get confused. Well, do not worry! We are here to help. So, let’s get going and help you choose!

Choosing The Best Humidifier For Plants

Choosing The Best Humidifier For Plants

Each plant humidifier has advantages and disadvantages, so choose wisely when buying!

Many fabulous leafy plants you see on your Instagram feed are tropical! These tropical plants in the wild are naturally present in rainforests. If you have even been to a rainforest, you must know it is humid. And, no matter how big your home is, unless you live in a rainforest, your indoor living space is not the same as in a lush tropical forest.

Therefore, running a humidifier is a good idea if you reside in a dry place or in an area where you need to heat the air in the winter. Humidifiers can increase the humidity of the air in no time. However, not all humidifiers for plants are created and built equally.

You must be careful with your selection, and there are many things to consider. So, before we provide you with a list of some of the best plant humidifiers on the market, let’s quickly go over what you need to consider before purchasing a plant humidifier.

1. Type Of The Humidifier

Type Of The Humidifier

Humidifiers are generally categorized as ultrasonic and evaporative based on how they operate.

Plants humidifiers work by releasing moisture into the air. However, different humidifier models vary in how they release water into the atmosphere. And based on this discharge technique, humidifiers for plants can be categorized into two main types:

A) Evaporative Humidifiers

Evaporative humidifiers work y creating an airflow with the help of a fan to create mist over a water reservoir. However, there is a filter on top of the water reservoir in these machines, and it needs to be changed now and then to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

When compared to ultrasonic plant humidifiers, these are inexpensive. However, they are a bit noisy because a fan needs to run to create and release moisture in the air.

B) Ultrasonic Humidifiers

It’s fascinating how ultrasonic plant humidifiers work. They also have a water tank, but instead of a fan, they use high-frequency sound vibrations (ultrasonic) to create mist. Now, ultrasonic humidifiers are relatively pricey, but on the plus side, they run quieter, last longer,  and have no filter, which must be replaced when clogged or dirty.

Furthermore, unlike evaporative humidifiers, these do not use hot water.

So there is no risk of spillages and accidental burns. However, there is one drawback. The lack of heat inside the unit might cause more bacterial and mold growth than usual.

2. Mist Temperature

Mist Temperature

The most popular humidifiers for indoor plants are small-area, cool-mist humidifiers.

Humidifiers can produce warm or cool mist, while some humidifiers can deliver both.

A) Warm Mist Humidifiers

In warm mist humidifiers, water is boiled to create hot steam, which is pushed out of the unit. Now they will undoubtedly take a hit on your electricity bill. However, on the bright side, when heating the water, they kill the bacteria, so they don’t get dispersed in your home.

Warm mist humidifiers are also a good choice if you live in a cold area, and they can keep indoor temperatures warm when outside temperatures dip. However, if you have allergies, do not choose them, as they can cause your nasal passages to swell.

B) Cool Mist Humidifiers

Cool mist humidifiers deliver room-temperature mist. And, since they do not heat the water, they use less energy than warm mist humidifiers. Now, this may not matter depending on the indoor plants you have at your home, but consider it if you pay your bills.

3. Humidity Output Settings

Even though the job of a humidifier is to increase moisture levels, it should release it in accordance with the humidity levels of the indoor space and its temperature.

That is why nearly all humidifiers come equipped with mist output controls that let the owner control their output based on ambient air conditions. Most humidifier units have at least two settings: low and high, to control output, but some also have three-speed settings.

These units are perfect for people who like more control over their environment. And, if you are one of them, you can also buy humidifiers with built n humidity sensors.

4. Maintenance & Setup

Maintenance & Setup

It is critical to allow your humidifier to dry out entirely once a week or fifteen days.

When buying a humidifier for your plants, please ensure that it is easy to set up, get going, and maintain in the long run. However, no matter how carefully you choose, there are still a few things that you will need to do if you buy a humidifier for your houseplants.

For example, you must ensure that the humidifier’s mist isn’t polluted with allergens by replacing the filter and keeping the water tank clean. If you do not do this, mold and bacteria might accumulate inside the unit, eventually coming out with the mist.

These can then cause diseases and trigger allergies in sensitive individuals. And cleaning your humidifier is also a critical factor in ensuring that it runs smoothly.

5. Noise Levels

If you want to place your humidifiers in a lounge or where you sleep, you must also consider the noise it produces. And, if you like it quiet, go for an ultrasonic humidifier.

6. Filter life

If you prefer a low-maintenance operation, I highly recommend choosing an air humidifier with no filter. However, if you are considering buying a model with a filter, remember to clean and replace it when it is dirty and clogged. And depending on the materials used and the quality, some filters might last longer than others, reducing operational costs.

7. Tank Capacity & Run Time

If you want your humidifier to run longer or need to put out a lot of moisture, you should consider buying a humidifier with a larger water tank. The water tank’s capacity is directly proportional to how long your plant humidifier will run in one single go.

They can store a lot of water at once, and you will not need to refill them longer. However, they will take up a lot of space indoors since they are big. So, large tank humidifiers might be a good choice if you have limited indoor space and need less mist.

And, in these conditions, you should find a smaller and more attractive humidifier.

8. Room Size

Room Size

Too much humidity from a large humidifier in a small room can kill plants.

Another thing you must keep in mind when buying a humidifier for your plants is to consider the room where you will place it. No matter how long you run it, if the humidifier is too small for the room size, you will not achieve the desired humidity levels inside.

Likewise, suppose you have a small room, and you put a large humidifier in it. In that case, even if you run it for short bursts, it will raise the humidity too much, which is detrimental not only to the plants but also to your furniture and the overall infrastructure of your home.

Brands often put a number on the unit manual or packaging that indicates how many square feet it can cover. So, when buying, consider the room size and choose accordingly.

9. Location

The last thing you must consider when buying a humidifier for your plants is where you will put it. If you have a fan-based humidifier, it should ideally be placed at least 5 to 6 feet away from the plants. Setting it closer may, in fact, cause the loss of moisture from plants.

In contrast, the ultrasonic ones should also be set at least 2 to 3 feet apart from plants.

Houseplants & Ideal Humidity Levels

best humidifiers for plants

Most indoor houseplants appreciate a humidity level between 30 to 50 percent on average.

Humidity is essential for healthy plant growth; it keeps them from drying and helps their foliage look good. However, not all indoor plants have the exact humidity needs, and providing your plants with too much moisture can do more bad than good.

For example, if you have grown vegetables like carrots and tomatoes indoors, high humidity can be an enemy for your plants. However, if you have orchids and other exotic tropical plants indoors, high humidity is necessary to keep them comfortable and healthy.

Another way to understand this is to mimic the plant’s natural habitat conditions once you bring it inside your home. Nevertheless, the ideal humidity for most indoor plants is about 30 to 50 percent in the summer and 15 to 25 percent in the winter.

Here is a breakdown of ideal humidity for different plan life stages

  • Germination Stage: 90 to 100 percent
  • Vegetative stage: 50 to 60 percent
  • Flowering Stage: 40 to 50 percent

And here is a breakdown of ideal humidity levels for different plants

  • Cacti: 10 to 20 percent
  • Ferns: 40 to 50 percent
  • Herbs: 40 to 70 percent
  • Leafy greens: 50 to 70 percent
  • Orchids: 40 to 70 percent
  • Tropical plants: 40 to 60 percent

When To Use A Plant Humidifier?

best humidifiers for plants

If you have humidity-loving plants, a plant humidifier can run every day or two.

Now that you know some of the best plant humidifiers out there and the ideal humidity levels for different plants and their life stages, let’s quickly go over a frequently asked question about plant humidifiers: when do you need to run a humidifier for plants?

I bought a humidifier last year when I noticed some of my indoor plants were wilting due to the lack of moisture in the indoor air. And running the humidifier for a few days straight brought most of those plants back to life and made their foliage crispier.

But how will you know that your plants need more moisture? Well, it is pretty straightforward. They will start looking dull than usual, and their leaves might turn brown, fall, or curl. You can also check the potting soil to determine if the humidity is too low.

Can I Use Any Humidifier On My Plants?

When I started looking for a humidifier for my plants, this was the first question I asked myself whether or not I could use any humidifier to increase moisture around my plants. So, I started talking to the experts and conducted some online research.

And based on my research, I found that the purpose of a humidifier, whether or not for plants, is to increase moisture in the air. Therefore, you can use any humidifier to make your plants comfortable. Do not fall for the ones that claim to be plant-specific.

Brands only use these terms for marketing, and you are much better off buying a humidifier with good features that suit your needs than using some fancy plant-related words.

Other Ways To Humidify Plants

Other Ways To Humidify Plants

Using pebble trays is another easy way to increase humidity around your indoor plants.

Even though humidifiers work great at maintaining optimal humidity indoors, it is not the only way to keep moisture around your plants. There are plenty of other methods and Do-it-yourself tricks that you can use to achieve similar results.

Cover Your Plants With Plastic

While it may not look attractive and kill the purpose of keeping indoor plants, it is an excellent way to maintain humidity around your plants. The trick is particularly effective for sensitive plants that need lots of moisture but are in an arid environment.

Dry Clothes In The Same Room

Do you also struggle to find a place to dry clothes in your home? If so, why not dry them in the space where you have placed your plants? It might not look tidy, but the water evaporating from clothes will surely raise the moisture in the air.

Use The Two-Pot Method

If you are a sucker for aesthetics and do not want to do any of the abovementioned things, use the two-pot method. Take a large pot in which your existing plant’s pot can be placed and fill the space between the pots with sphagnum moss and water.

The water will evaporate over time, keeping the humidity levels stable.

Shower Your Plants

If you want to get two jobs done at once, take your plants in the shower or bath with you. Now, this may look or sound weird, but it works. Not only will this trick clean your plants thoroughly, but the water drenching from the leaves will retain the moisture.

Use A Pebble Tray

It is another excellent way to maintain humidity and moisture around your plants. All you have to do is place some pebbles on a tray and the potted plant on the tray. This looks unique, and the evaporated water will keep the moisture levels stable for days.

Mist Your Houseplants

Misting your plants is straightforward and gives instant results; however, humidifying your plants works only for a few hours. Nevertheless, if you are primarily at home and like to keep busy, misting your plants occasionally works wonders at maintaining humidity.

Place Your Plants In Groupings

Plants release water from their leaves. In fact, 90 percent of the water that enters plants leaves like this. So, why not use it and place your plants together in groups? And the water from their leaves will keep each other moist and humid for some time.

The Bottom Line

There are innumerable humidifiers that can keep your plants hydrated and humid indoors. However, why not make the best of your money and choose a model? That is where the list, as mentioned earlier, comes in. However, I highly recommend that you do not just rely on a humidifier and use other methods of maintaining humidity around your plants.
